Crafts For Boys

by Vivian Baxter

Frequently, the word “craft” makes people think about ladies knitting or painting pots. It’s a natural association since girls tend to be more interested on craft work than boys. However, it doesn’t mean guys can’t enjoy craft as well. Actually, some crafting activities fit much more boys than girls.

Nothing says that boys are not allowed to do crochet but this is something usually enjoyed by girls. Crafty boys normally pick projects which allow them to be creative in a masculine style. Find below crafts enjoyed by men:

Woodworking

most of the girls wouldn’t enjoy sweating and being, covered with dust, right? But, on the other hand, a boy may absolutely love it! Woodworking requires getting hands dirty and some physical strength what presents this activity to a boy as a “job for men”. It doesn’t mean girls can’t do it, I personally know a few ladies who are incredible carpenters, but we have to agree that woodworking sounds much more boyish than pottery or tricot.

Another reason for a boy to get stared on woodworking is the number of possibilities it has. He can start with the simples whittling and end up making musical instruments, sculptures, furniture or even boats! Those are all examples of woodworking although each one of those activities is called by a specific name.

Whittling is the art of sculpting animals from driftwood. Beginners on this art should opt to use Balsa wood which is softer and easier to handle. Remember that stronger is the wood harder is to carver it and that keeping your carving tools sharp will make sculpting a lot of easier.

Complex woodworking will demand the use of electric devices such as jigsaws and drills. Make sure you do a safe use of them, otherwise you can badly hurt yourself. You should also plan in details all the steps of your job to avoid mistakes. Precision on the execution of your project will save you from having to throw away a good piece of expensive wood due to a silly slip-up.

Woodworking is definitely a good example of crafts a man could enjoy, but it doesn’t mean they cannot try craft arts normally considered as a girly thing. Would you call a footballer a sissy because he does knitting? Well, some of them do it and created pieces to be auctioned for charity.

There is another smelly and sweaty craft that girls wouldn’t enjoy and boys may simply love: blacksmithing. Besides of the dirty aspect of this craft, not often we will find girls having enough muscular strength for this activity. However, blacksmithing is not only about powerful arms; it also demands skilled hands and courage to deal with the red-hot iron.

In order to be enjoyed by a boy, a craft activity will usually have something to do with physically challenging tasks that would be hardly chosen by a girl. However, it doesn’t mean it’s wrong for a boy or a man to like crafts normally associated with ladies. The main point here is to remember that crafts are for boys as well.
